Commissioning Your Own Piece Of Sculpture

I thought it maybe useful to give readers a little bit of insight into what you can expect if you were to commission a sculpture from me.

Usually I like to meet in person or if that’s not convenient with yourselves, then a discussion over zoom or phone call to share initial thoughts. What surprises people the most is the amount of time it takes. Depending on the size and complexity it can be over six months from starting the process until delivery.

I think it is important to manage expectations from the start and be clear and realistic with your client. Many things are out of our control and may not end up how we envision they would be. From those initial discussions I sketch a few ideas to check I have understood and interpreted my clients thoughts correctly. If options are requested I develop ideas for them to consider. I never rush people to make decisions, I believe it is important to take time to consider what you want the outcome to be.

After the detailed sketches have been agreed, work can begin on construction. I take a number of photos along the way to update my client and check they are happy, or require any small tweaks. Feedback from clients is time sensitive so that changes can be made to the sculpture.

Then it’s the waiting game to enable the piece to dry enough before placing in the kiln. This is the scariest part as you have no control once the sculpture is in the kiln.

It is such an honour to make a sculpture so personal to another individual, immortalising someone else’s story in clay. Although it can be quite stressful producing a commission, it can also be challenging and help develop you as a maker.

If you are interested in commissioning me please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
